New Delhi, Oct 26, 2016 : Sidhu will face trial for alleged corrupt practice in 2009 Lok Sabha Poll. In a set-back to cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered trial be recommenced in an election petition alleging extra expenditure past the permitted restrict and misuse of a authorities official throughout his election from Amritsar in 2009.

We order accordingly.”


Sidhu had challenged Punjab and Haryana High Court order directing his trial in an election petition by Om Prakash Soni. Within the election held on May 13, 2009, Sidhu – who has now floated a political outfit Awaz-e-Punjab, had contested as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate as Sidhu will face trial for alleged corrupt practice in 2009 Lok Sabha Poll.


The court rejected Sidhu’s rivalry that Soni who has challenged his election on grounds of corrupt follow has not backed his allegations of extra expenditure on ads in print and digital media by producing the copies of the newspapers through which advertisements had appeared.


Soni has alleged that in opposition to the overall prescribed restrict of Rs 25 lakh, Sidhu had spent over Rs 32 lakh (Rs 32,88,845) on ads in print and digital media alone when Sidhu will face trial for alleged corrupt practice in 2009 Lok Sabha Poll.


Talking for the bench, Justice Gogoi stated: “In our thought-about view, it can’t be stated that full particulars of the allegation of corrupt follow haven’t been set out by the election petitioner. The dates on which the commercials had appeared; the particulars of the newspapers through which such advertisements have been printed; the associated fee incurred for every kind of commercial in every newspaper, have all been talked about as Sidhu will face trial for alleged corrupt practice in 2009 Lok Sabha Poll.
